We’ve all been there. We go to knit a pattern, and it is full of mathematical and grammatical errors. What an annoyance if the pattern was one we spent hard earned money on!
Now think about that pattern that was beautifully written and edited to be grammatically and mathematically correct. Knitters tend to recognize skill and hard work when they see it and will be fans of the designer for life. I’m here to help you become that designer that everyone recommends!
So what exactly do I do to help you publish fantastic patterns?
- I check your pattern to make sure all the pieces are there and in logical order. i.e. your mitten pattern has a cuff, thumb, and hand…
- I check that your pattern has no grammatical errors, and that it is consistently worded throughout.
- I can check the pattern against your stylesheet. Don’t have a stylesheet? I can help you make one!
- I check your math. I make sure that all your numbers add up and that they match the measurements given.
- I can make your charts and your simple schematics.
So how does this work? And more importantly, what are my prices?
- You contact me and we discuss what type of pattern you are writing and what you’d like me to edit. I can tech edit the whole pattern or just parts.
- I will need to see your pattern before I can give you a solid estimate (with rate cap). I charge $35 an hour, with a quarter hour minimum.
- Accessories usually take between 30 minutes to 3 hours; Garments between 1.5 to 5 hours.
- I recheck your pattern after the initial corrections have been made, in order to make sure it is 100% ready to go live.
- I have a maximum of 2 weeks turnaround time. Most patterns will be ready much, much sooner. I can also do rush jobs!
Anything I don’t edit?
- No brioche or entrelac! Those two are not my areas of expertise, but if you need an editor for those, I’d be happy to ask my colleagues if they edit these patterns!
- A single pattern that includes 12 sizes + loads of cables or lace charts + set-in sleeves + bust shaping + waist shaping, etc… Honestly, I don’t have enough time for those! I have time to edit up to 10 sizes at a time. If it is the most advanced sweater pattern on the planet, I’ll probably suggest that I find a colleague that does tech editing full time.
- I don’t write patterns for designers. I will make suggestions, and give you all the numbers you need, but the actual writing should be the work of the designer in order to keep their “voice”.
